"In the coming months", Apple and Google plan to do away with the need for dedicated apps and bake "a broader, Bluetooth-based contact tracing platform" into their operating systems directly. How does digital contact tracing work? Digital contact tracing uses radio transmitters inside smartphones to establish other phone owners the user's come into contact with - the same way that phones and other devices send out Bluetooth signals to seek devices to connect with. If person A and person B have a 10-minute conversation in the street, their phones will be exchanging anonymous identifier codes that change every 15 minutes. Person B's phone will have been checking the server for positive beacons from their past 14 days, meaning they'll receive a notification from the healthcare app letting them know someone they've been in contact with has tested positive for the virus and linking them to further information about symptoms, how to self-isolate etc. Why isn't the UK using Apple and Google's new coronavirus tracking app? 'Significant majority' of RBS staff home-workers to remain in place until September - memo. LONDON (Reuters) - Royal Bank of Scotland <RBS.L> Chief Executive Alison Rose said on Thursday a "significant majority" of more than 50,000 staff working from home since the coronavirus lockdown would continue to do so until September, according to a memo seen by Reuters. The state-backed bank said around 400 staff unable to work from home will be asked to return to offices and call centres next month, the memo said. RBS has also temporarily banned hot-desking and said it would place at least one empty desk in between people to ensure social distancing. Since lockdown started, around 10,000 staff have continued to work in branches and some offices.
Last month, before Google and Apple announced their joint effort to enable COVID-19 exposure notifications, I wrote about the trouble with using Bluetooth-based solutions for contact tracing. Chief among the issues is getting a meaningful number of people to download any app in the first place, public health officials told me. And now that such apps are being released in the United States, we’re seeing just how big a challenge that is. “As we respond to this unprecedented public health emergency, we invite other states to join us in leveraging smartphone technologies to strengthen existing contact tracing efforts,” North Dakota Gov. Later this year, an update to iOS and Android will allow people to begin participating in the program even if they haven’t yet downloaded an official public health app. But as we’ve discussed here before, the best-designed tech interventions won’t be effective if they’re not supported by contact tracing and isolation of new cases. So let’s check in to see how we’re doing on those fronts.
After the economic turmoil and market volatility we've seen in 2020, it's possible that these two factors could have a major influence on the Bt (LON:BT.A) share price. For contrarian investors looking for shares that are overlooked by the market, quality and value are vital clues. The Bt share price has moved by -29.2% over the past three months and it’s currently trading at 111.167. But what's interesting about this share is its strong exposure to those all-important profit drivers of high quality and a relatively cheap valuation. Good quality stocks are loved by the market because they're more likely to be solid, dependable businesses. It gives you a total value of the stock (including its cash and debt), which makes it easier to compare different stocks. As a percentage, the higher the Earnings Yield, the better value the share.

A Challenge To Amazon, As Microsoft And FedEx Enter Multiyear Collaboration. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) and FedEx Corporation (NYSE: FDX) will join forces in a multiyear technology and logistics partnership, the companies announced this week. "Together with Microsoft, we will combine the immense power of technology with the vast scale of our infrastructure to help revolutionize commerce and create a network for what's next for our customers," said Frederick W. Smith, chairman and CEO of FedEx, in a statement. Anything that drives "more precise" inventory management and logistics and also improves the ability of companies to sense and respond to potential issues and disruptions using real-time data will prove valuable, Brittain Ladd, a former Amazon executive who now runs his own consultancy, told FreightWaves. But Ladd said he believes "the ambition is much bigger," and that Microsoft will ultimately leverage the partnership to reimagine the shopping experience, using a combination of AI, machine learning, voice activation and virtual reality.
Facebook will begin reopening its offices worldwide on July 6th with stringent safety measures in place, according to a new report from Bloomberg published on Wednesday. The reopening plan is part of a multistep process the social network has in place to begin restoring some of its in-person operations, which are crucial to its data center management and the development of hardware like the Portal video chatting device and its Oculus line of virtual reality headsets and accessories. Those who do will be required to wear face masks and undergo temperature checks to monitor for virus symptoms consistent with COVID-19, Bloomberg reports. Although the July date is in place largely for Facebook’s US and European offices, the report states that some Asian offices may reopen sooner, dependent on the specific country or city’s containment of the novel coronavirus. It’s also unclear how the company will run its various dining facilities, many of which offer buffet-style meals and constitute a major perk to on-site work at Facebook and other big tech companies.
