Fortnite Maker Epic Games Acquires Group Video Chat App Houseparty

700

Made by the same team as Meerkat. Fortnite maker Epic Games has acquired group video chat app Houseparty, which had recently started to move into the world of video gaming with the launch of features such as integrated games — including the popular mobile app Heads Up — and screen sharing. But Epic has no plans to integrate Houseparty though, at least for now. It will stay as a separate app on its own, and the company will not share user data between your Houseparty and Epic Games accounts. Launched in 2016, Houseparty was made by the same team behind Meerkat, the live-streaming app that was famous for a few months in 2015 before its competitor Periscope gained prominence, thanks to its acquisition by Twitter. Fortnite creator Epic Games acquires group video chat Houseparty

700

"We kept hearing that people were using Houseparty to talk to their real life friends while gaming together and one game came up over and over again: Fortnite," Houseparty CEO Sima Sistani Tweeted. The price of the acquisition was not announced, but the unexpected deal immediately sparked speculation about what the maker of the most popular video game might do with the teen-focused chat app. Officials from Epic Games and Houseparty stressed the social interaction aspects of each respective product. Fortnite has become a worldwide gaming phenomenon, allowing up to 100 people anywhere in the world to connect online and play in the same round. A spokesperson for Epic Games declined to comment on what an integration of Houseparty and Epic Games may look like in the future. However, a Tweet from Sistani highlights how users have already used the platforms together:. While Fortnite does have an in-game voice chat function, many players opt to use independent group chat programs to communicate with fellow gamers.

Fortnite maker Epic acquires social video app Houseparty – TechCrunch

The deal seems like a natural fit for Epic. Social has been an integral piece of Fortnite’s success as a multiplayer battle royale title. Founded in 2015, Houseparty is a social network that delivers video chat across a number of different platforms, including iOS, Android and macOS. “Houseparty brings people together, creating positive social interactions in real time,” Epic CEO Tim Sweeney said in a post announcing the news. “By teaming up, we can build even more fun, shared experiences than what could be achieved alone.”. For Houseparty, the acquisition appears to mean the app will continue to operate relatively unchanged for the time being.

Houseparty Video Chat App Acquired By Epic Games

700 INF

Houseparty, a popular group video chat app, has been bought by Fortnite developer Epic Games. It’s not surprising that this has happened given that Houseparty has recently introduced some gaming-related features for its platform such as screen sharing and integrated games. The company had also mentioned earliert his year that its app was being used by people to chat with their friends while they played Fortnite. So it would make perfect sense for Epic Games, the company behind Fortnite, to go ahead and acquire the company. “Joining Epic is a great step forward in achieving our mission of bringing empathy to online communication,” said Sima Sistani, CEO of Houseparty.

4 Things Tencent Does Better Than Baidu

700 BIDU

Tencent's stock fell about 20% over the past 12 months, but Baidu fared much worse with a decline of over 50%. Baidu and Tencent aren't directly affected by tariffs. However, the tariffs are hurting other companies and throttling purchases of online advertising in certain sectors. As a result, Chinese companies that generate most of their sales from online ads -- like Baidu and SINA -- struggled more than companies with better-diversified businesses. Baidu controls 65% of China's search market, according to StatCounter. However, the stickiness of that search platform is wearing off as Chinese internet users spend more time on other apps, like Tencent's WeChat, ByteDance's TikTok, and Alipay, which is backed by Alibaba(NYSE: BABA). Baidu's revenue growth slowed to a crawl last quarter, yet it still tossed money at driverless cars, smart speakers, cloud services, new apps (like its short video app Haokan) content for iQiyi, and massive marketing blitzes. As a result, its total operating expenses surged 53% year over year and its adjusted operating margin plummeted from 26% to 2%.
