Better Buy: Square vs. Mastercard

MA

E-commerce sales, where credit card use is twice as high as transactions made in person, continue to outpace total retail sales in the U.S., according to the Census Bureau. Two companies poised to take advantage of this trend are Mastercard Inc(NYSE: MA) and Square Inc(NYSE: SQ). Transaction-based revenue and profit rose 27% and 29%, respectively. What's important to note, however, is that Square is no longer a simple smartphone attachment that accepts card and digital payments at the point of sale. In Mastercard's fourth quarter, revenue rose to $4.8 billion, a 15% increase year over year, and adjusted earnings per share (EPS) grew to $1.55, a 36% increase over last year's fourth quarter.

Mastercard drops bid for UK's Earthport

MA

(Reuters) - Mastercard Inc said on Friday its offer window to buy payments firm Earthport Plc had lapsed, which potentially clears the way for rival Visa Inc to make a bid for the British company. Earthport, which offers a lower-cost option to traditional payments systems, has been at the heart of a bidding battle between Mastercard and Visa since the end of December. The company, which had earlier backed Mastercard's bid, most recently urged shareholders to accept Visa's higher offer. "(Mastercard) has today exercised its right to terminate the cooperation agreement entered into by Bidco and Earthport with immediate effect," the company said in a statement, adding it had valid acceptance from only 0.29 percent shareholders of Earthport.

Carl Zeiss Gets FDA Clearance For Epithelial Thickness Mapping For CIRRUS HD-OCT

MA

Carl Zeiss Gets FDA Clearance For Epithelial Thickness Mapping For CIRRUS HD-OCT. (RTTNews) - German manufacturer of optical systems Carl Zeiss AG, branded as ZEISS, announced Thursday that its Medical Technology Segment Carl Zeiss Meditec AG (CZMWF.PK) has received FDA clearance for Epithelial Thickness Mapping or ETM for CIRRUS HD-OCT, enabling more detailed assessment of refractive surgery patients. The Segment has received 510(k) clearance, expanding the capabilities of its Anterior Segment Premier Module to include ETM. According to refractive specialist John Doane of Discover Vision Center in Kansas City, the epithelium is the outermost layer of the cornea and is known to actively remodel itself in response to subtle changes in corneal shape due to pathologies such as early keratoconus that may be missed if using corneal topography alone. "With CIRRUS' Epithelial Thickness Mapping, I can now better identify eligible patients for refractive surgery, and I can also monitor the cornea's post-surgical healing response," Doane said.

Outbound travel market may be best bet for Visa, Mastercard should they finally gain access to China

MA V

Outbound travel market may be best bet for Visa, Mastercard should they finally gain access to China. South China Morning Post4 March 2019, 10:03 PM GMT. While “cash or card?” is the usual question when standing at a cashier’s till in the west – in China the answer is neither. Visa and MasterCard, the world’s leading credit card companies accepted in over 200 countries, may eventually enter China after a 20-year wait as part of a potential US-China trade deal. But China’s transition towards a cashless and cardless society, with nine out of 10 internet users already paying for things with smartphones, means the card giants will likely look to work with the country’s dominant mobile payments providers in key segments, such as outbound tourism. Despite the expansion of UnionPay, WeChat and Alipay in overseas markets, using Visa and Mastercard when abroad is still much easier than using Chinese payments systems currently,” said Michale Yeo, research manager for financial and retail insights at IDC. One third of their transactions were made via mobile payments on recent trips overseas, overtaking cash for the first time, according to a Nielsen survey from January. However, around 21 per cent of Chinese outbound tourists said they have never used WeChat Pay or Alipay in a foreign country, with 61 per cent of those saying they did not know they could, or that mobile payments were not offered by merchants, according to research by consulting firm Kapronasia, which polled 1,000 Chinese consumers.
