Whirlpool profit beats estimates on higher prices, cost cuts

WHR

(Reuters) - Whirlpool Corp (WHR.N) beat analysts' estimates for quarterly earnings and forecast 2020 profit largely above expectations on Monday, as the appliances maker raised prices and reined in expenses to cushion the impact of higher production costs. Cost of imported steel and aluminium, both major components in the company's products, have remained high due to U.S. tariffs. Whirlpool, which owns brands such as KitchenAid and Maytag, said it expects full-year 2020 profit to be between $16.00 per share and $17.00 per share, the mid-point of which came in above analysts' average estimate of $16.34. Net earnings available to the company rose to $288 million (219 million pounds), or $4.52 per share, in the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, from $170 million, or $2.64 per share, a year earlier.

Whirlpool recall: is your machine a fire risk, and what should you do?

WHR

Whirlpool kicked off the recall on Thursday after announcing in an official safety notice in December that up to 519,000 washing machines sold under the Hotpoint and Indesit brands in the UK and Ireland between October 2014 and February 2018 could be affected by a flaw with the door-locking system. To date there have been 79 fires reported, but it is understood that damage was limited to machines and did not result in any serious injuries. The company said the defect was detected by its own safety team and that the issue relates to a particular combination of components which are no longer used in the production of these models. Alternatively, customers can call Whirlpool’s freephone hotline, 0800 316 1442, where an adviser can assist with checking your model and providing further information. However, both suffered from meltdown in December, with anxious customers struggling to get information from a website which promptly crashed and constantly jammed phone lines.

Whirlpool urged to compensate families left using laundrettes because of dangerous washing machines

WHR

Whirlpool urged to compensate families left using laundrettes because of dangerous washing machines. The manufacturing giant faced fresh calls to offer affected customers a full refund on Thursday, as it launches a recall of up to 519,000 devices. So far Whirlpool has offered to repair or replace the appliances, which are at risk of catching fire due to a flaw with the door-locking system. Sue Davies, head of consumer protection at Which?, said: "It would clearly be unacceptable if customers were left for many months without adequate washing facilities in their homes, particularly when there is also no offer to cover consequential costs such as trips to the laundrette. said it has been contacted by customers who have chosen to do all their washing at laundrettes rather than continue using their Whirlpool machines. Others have bought new machines from different brands or done their washing at relatives' houses.

Whirlpool's Yummly® Food Platform Introducing Smart Thermometer that Monitors and Alerts for Stress-Free, Precision Cooking

WHR

Available in early 2020, the Yummly Smart Thermometer uses dual temperature sensors to simultaneously monitor food and oven temperatures, allowing users to track their cooking remotely with their smartphone, and get alerts in real-time when their food is ready. "The value of this smart thermometer is that you can stick it in a raw chicken, forget about it, and have confidence that you'll be enjoying a delicious meal that's cooked at the ideal temperature," said Joel Gamoran, Yummly Pro featured chef and content collaborator. Using Yummly Pro, the integration of select recipes with Whirlpool connected ovens, and the Yummly Smart Thermometer to guide their cooking, foodies and families learn from the best, one recipe at a time, with temperature precision at every step. "We understand the precision that goes into cooking the perfect roasted chicken, so it was important to us in developing the Yummly Smart Thermometer to focus first on monitoring and alerting, and second on wireless communication to auto-adjust oven cooking methods and temperatures at the perfect time."

MPs demand compensation for Whirlpool customers after recall

WHR

Manufacturer Whirlpool (WHR) last week recalled around half a million washing machines in the UK. “Whirlpool's advice to affected customers simply not to use the machines until repaired or replaced is wholly inadequate, particularly in the busy holiday period when families are at home,” said Yvonne Fovargue, an MP who chaired the all-party grouping on consumer protection in the last parliament, told the BBC. Around a fifth of Hotpoint and Indesit-branded washing machines sold in the UK since 2014 are thought to be affected by the fault, which has caused 79 fires thus far, Whirlpool has said. More than five million tumble dryers sold over 11 years were thought to have a fire risk, but the company only issued a recall after four years. Former business committee chair Rachel Reeves told the BBC that those affected by the current washing machine recall should also be offered a refund on top of the repair and replacement.
