[$$] Walmart Turns to Food Delivery to Fend Off Amazon

WMT

Inc. was caught off guard after it began offering to deliver fresh groceries from a store in North Bergen, N.J., earlier this month, only to find orders flooding in from across the Hudson River. “We never would have gone in with the intention that this would work with $11,” said a spokeswoman for Walmart, which hadn’t intended to include Manhattan within the delivery radius.

Walmart Readies Introduction of Low-Priced iPad Rival

WMT AAPL

The world’s largest retailer plans to introduce an inexpensive, kid-friendly tablet computer under its ONN store brand, part of a broader redesign of its electronics department. The device will be made by a Chinese supplier and run on Google’s Android operating system, according to photos found on a database of wireless product applications filed with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission. Tablet users don’t buy new ones at the same pace as they replace smartphones, which have also grown in size and capacity, reducing the need for a larger device. Apple Inc.’s iPad brand is the top seller, followed by lines from Samsung Electronics Co. and Amazon.com Inc. After spending last year overhauling its apparel offering, Walmart will make electronics and home goods a focus this year, according to presentations given by senior management at a recent meeting of the company’s suppliers.

Walmart Stock Still Doesn’t Look Quite Cheap Enough

WMT

Simply put, I’m not sold on Walmart (NYSE:WMT). And for the most part, the market of late has agreed. Walmart stock hit $100 after earnings back in August. Since then, WMT stock has seen quite a bit of volatility, but at $98 sits roughly back where it started. Profit growth simply isn’t that impressive, even with Q4 earnings beating expectations. And unless that changes, it’s tough to see WMT stock rising much further. Bulls might retort that Walmart is a better company and that might be true, but so far, that improvement isn’t showing up in earnings.

Asda removes 6500 tonnes of plastic packaging in the past year

WMT

The Big 4 grocer said it achieved this in almost 1000 own-brand items, from fresh fruit and veg to electronics and homewares, by removing the equivalent weight of 600 million empty plastic bottles. Asda said the milestone marked a significant step towards itscommitment to reduce plastic that is used in the packaging of its own-brand range of items. Some of the changes that have been implemented over the last 12 months include swapping family chilled ready meal trays from black plastic to foil, changing pizza bases from non-recyclable polystyrene to fully recyclable cardboard, replacing five million plastic bags on its bedding range with a cardboard band, taking plastic covers off over 50 million greetings cards, and removing plastic windows and film from over 1.6 million mince pies over Christmas. Asda said it had also taken steps to make its packaging more recyclable, including changing all of its fresh produce trays from black plastic to clear, and making all of its packaging 100 per cent recyclable by 2025. “Making changes of this scale in a business of this size is never easy, but I was clear last year that we needed to take a root and branch review of what packaging we use for our products,” Asda chief executive Roger Burnley said.
