National Grid’s New Venture Capital Arm: ‘We Want to Disrupt Ourselves’
National Grid intends to change that once and for all, with the launch of a unique new venture investment and innovation unit. NGP’s role is to keep its parent company more than one step ahead of the latest breakthrough ideas and at the forefront of the energy industry — with a bold vision to “define” a smarter and more renewable energy future. “As the only global utility-backed VC and innovation firm in Silicon Valley, National Grid Partners is different than other utilities, VCs, and CVCs (corporate venture captial groups),” Lisa Lambert, chief technology and innovation officer of National Grid and senior vice president of NGP, wrote in an email. “Historically, Silicon Valley has left energy investing behind and NGP is now one of the few firms focused on energy’s next renaissance and the wave of Cleantech 2.0.”.
