DS Smith seals £450m sale of plastics division

The FTSE 100-listed group said it is set to make £400 million in net proceeds from the sale to private equity firm Olympus Partners. Box maker DS Smith has agreed to sell its plastics division in a deal worth 585 million US dollars (£450 million) as it looks to cut debt and refocus on sustainable packaging. DS Smith said in December it was looking at options for its plastics division, including a potential sale. Miles Roberts, group chief executive of DS Smith, said: “The transaction is attractive both financially and strategically for DS Smith as, together with the acquisition of Europac, we reinforce our position as a leader in sustainable packaging with a clear focus on our fibre-based business.”.

UPDATE 2-FTSE 100 up as tobacco shares, DS Smith rise; L&G slips on results

March 6 (Reuters) - Britain's FTSE 100 inched up on Wednesday as tobacco stocks gained on U.S. FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb's departure and DS Smith rose after selling its plastics division, while Legal & General slipped after results. The FTSE 100 gained for the fourth straight session and closed 0.2 percent higher, while the FTSE 250 was 0.4 percent lower as a weaker pound weighed. British American Tobacco advanced 5.2 percent to a near four-month high and Imperial Brands rose 1.3 percent after U.S. FDA Commissioner Gottlieb, who strove to curb use of flavoured e-cigarettes, said he would step down next month. Packaging firm DS Smith added 3.7 percent after agreeing to sell its plastics division to private equity firm Olympus Partners for an enterprise value of $585 million.

Serco turnaround boss Soames joins packaging firm DS Smith board

Rupert Soames, chief executive of outsourcing giant Serco, has joined packaging firm DS Smith as a non-executive director and member of its board. DS Smith’s stock market value has suffered in recent months, slumping 31.6 per cent to 336p at yesterday’s close, down from 491.4p in October. But shares jumped 3.4 per cent on the news, balancing out to 347.5p this afternoon.
