Why AutoDesk's Business Is Built to Last

ADSK

One of the most underappreciated software companies on the market today may be Autodesk, Inc.(NASDAQ: ADSK), the company synonymous with computer-aided design (CAD). It doesn't make many products that would ever make their way into consumers' hands, but it does make indispensable tools for dozens of industries, from architecture to injection molding. From the time students start engineering or architecture school they're learning on Autodesk products. When they get into the professional world, knowing AutoCAD, or another Autodesk product, is often required. The feedback loop. When the most valuable part of the value chain uses a standard product, as is the case with CAD, it becomes standard up and down the value chain.

Why Autodesk, Inc. Has Risen 31.3% in 2018

ADSK

Travis Hoium, The Motley FoolMotley FoolJuly 13, 2018, 4:48 PM GMT. What happened. Shares of drafting software giant Autodesk, Inc.(NASDAQ: ADSK) are up 31.1% so far in 2018, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence, as investors buy into the company's subscription financial model. So what. Autodesk has been in an odd position over the last few years, transitioning from a model that focused on selling customers a piece of software with a high upfront cost to selling on a subscription basis. In theory, the subscription model will make the company's results more predictable, but as the transition takes place we can see a drop in revenue and margins because of how sales and research and development expenses are accounted for.

Autodesk acquires Assemble Systems to build up its construction tech vertical – TechCrunch

ADSK

Autodesk acquires Assemble Systems to build up its construction tech vertical. Autodesk has made a name for itself among designers, engineers and architects with its 3D and other modelling software. It had recently launched a project management platform called BIM 360, and the plan will be to integrate Assemble -- which provides software that lets construction firms plan projects, but also manage bids, estimate costs and carry out assembly works -- with that. And it will also bring a lot of potential customers into the Autodesk fray: Assemble has 174 unique customers using its software across 1,000 sites, working on 12,700 projects. Startups like PlanGrid helped put the concept of construction tech on the map when it became a part of Y Combinator in 2012 with its early concept of using iPad tablets as a better way of creating and sharing blueprints. But given that construction goods and services is estimated to be a $10 trillion industry -- and employing seven percent of all of the world's workforce, making it one of the world's biggest -- it's no surprise to see rising demand and valuations for startups in the field.
