Amazon with Lightning Network? Early Bitcoin Developer Isn’t Impressed

AMZN BTC

By CCN: You’ve likely heard the buzz about a new Chrome extension that will allow people to make purchases on Amazon using the Lightning Network, Moon. The buzz shouldn’t confuse you, hopefully: Amazon isn’t accepting any form of bitcoin, and they’re not integrating the Lightning Network. The extension does some ninja work in the background to get your crypto into fiat and then gives that to Amazon or other e-commerce sites. There’s no similar incentive with apps like Moon, which is part of why they won’t be the “killer app” that leads to mass adoption. Former Bitcoin Core developer Jeff Garzik isn’t very impressed with the idea, saying that it probably won’t get Grandpa using crypto.

Why Is Apple Paying Amazon $30 Million a Month?

AMZN AAPL

Apple(NASDAQ: AAPL) and Amazon(NASDAQ: AMZN) weren't competitors in the past, but the two companies now have overlapping interests in app stores, streaming media, virtual assistants, smart speakers, tablets, and set-top boxes. Apple is gradually evolving into Amazon's ecosystem rival as it diversifies its business beyond the iPhone, but it's still tethered to Amazon in one major way: the cloud. Apple reportedly pays Amazon $30 million per month to use Amazon Web Services (AWS), the largest cloud platform in the world. Apple reduced its AWS fees by spreading its cloud services across Microsoft's (NASDAQ: MSFT) Azure and Alphabet's (NASDAQ: GOOG)(NASDAQ: GOOGL) Google Cloud Platform.

The Biggest Sign Yet Amazon Prime Membership Is Near Saturation in the U.S.

AMZN

The Biggest Sign Yet Amazon Prime Membership Is Near Saturation in the U.S. Adam Levy, The Motley FoolMotley FoolApril 23, 2019, 7:00 PM GMT. The online retailer takes about half of all the money consumers spend when shopping online in the U.S. And that number has steadily climbed higher as Amazon's growth outpaced the industry. But Prime membership may be nearing saturation in the U.S. The estimated 103 million U.S. shoppers with Prime represents just 12% year-over-year growth. But the biggest sign Amazon Prime's growth in the U.S. may be close to its saturation point is that it's become increasingly difficult for Amazon to convert trial members into paid subscribers. Discounts at Whole Foods appeal to existing members because half of Whole Foods shoppers are Prime members, so paying an extra $20 per year to save 10% on sale items at Whole Foods is well worth it. But perks like that might not be as valuable to customers who aren't already Prime members and likely don't shop at Whole Foods. If Amazon wants to get new members, it has to provide value to customers who haven't already found it in what Amazon offers.

Clouds Part: Amazon And Microsoft Cloud Businesses In Focus Ahead Of Earnings

AMZN MSFT

Microsoft is scheduled to report fiscal Q3 earnings after the close Wednesday, with Amazon expected to report Q1 earnings after the close Thursday. As a reminder, cloud computing provides a way for businesses to access servers, storage, databases and application services over the Internet. A company like AMZN or MSFT owns and maintains the network-connected hardware required for these services, while their business customers can use what they need through the web without having to build or buy expensive hardware platforms. As the two companies’ cloud businesses grow, they’re touting partnerships and expanding their reach even to competitors in an effort to climb to the top. For instance, earlier this year, MSFT announced a partnership with Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. (NASDAQ: WBA) to develop new health care delivery models and for WBA to migrate most of its infrastructure into MSFT’s Azure cloud. At the same time, Amazon counts one of its own biggest competitors—Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL)—as a major customer for its cloud platform, with CNBC reporting this week that AAPL is spending more than $30 million a month on Amazon’s cloud even as AAPL invests to build its own data storage. Like MSFT, the company could conceivably be dealing with slower capital expenditures from customers, and both MSFT and AMZN faced a stronger dollar in early 2019 vs. a year ago that might have slowed sales to overseas customers.Figure 1: HEADS IN THE CLOUD: It’s been a quick elevator ride higher for shares of Amazon (AMZN - candlestick) and Microsoft (MSFT - purple line) so far in 2019, as this year-to-date chart shows.
