GOOGL GOOG

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Alphabet's Google on Thursday took a step towards resolving its spat with publishers, saying it would pay some media groups in Australia, Brazil and Germany for high-quality content and expects to do more deals, but others were sceptical. The U.S. internet giant has for years tried to fend off demands for payment from news publishers worldwide in return for using their content, with European media groups among their fiercest critics. "Today, we are announcing a licensing programme to pay publishers for high-quality content for a news experience launching later this year," Brad Bender, Google's vice-president for news, said in a blogpost.

Google Will Start Paying Publishers for Upcoming News Service

GOOGL GOOG

(Bloomberg) -- Alphabet Inc.’s Google will begin paying select media outlets featured in a yet-to-be released news service later this year, a major business shift for the search engine after years of pressure from media companies and regulators. The licensing deals will start in three countries and Google is in talks with publishers in six more, the company said Thursday in a blog post. Brad Bender, a Google vice president, wrote in the post that the company would pay for “high-quality content.” Google didn’t disclose the financial terms or when the new service will start. “This program will help participating publishers monetize their content through an enhanced storytelling experience that lets people go deeper into more complex stories, stay informed and be exposed to a world of different issues and interests,” Bender wrote. For years, media organizations have criticized Google and other internet platforms for their treatment of news articles and grip on digital advertising.

Amazon Fire HD 8 (2020) review: The good, cheap Android tablet Google won't build

GOOGL GOOG +1 more GOOGL GOOG AMZN

Amazon Fire HD 8 (2020) review: The good, cheap Android tablet Google won't build. It brings most of the improvements from last year's Fire HD 10 to the 8-inch lineup, including USB Type-C and faster performance, and I think it's a pretty great buy for $90. The general selection is more limited than the Play Store, but most of the major media streaming platforms and communication tools are available, and there of course a lot of games. If you want to check if certain apps are available on the Fire HD 8 before buying it, have a look through the Appstore website. There are some catches — some apps (like Netflix) are hidden because the Fire tablet doesn't pass SafetyNet, and you can't manage apps downloaded from the Play Store with Amazon's FreeTime parental controls — but it works well enough for downloading apps.
