Council to 'force' re-route of Orange walks in Glasgow

ORA

Share this with EmailShare this with FacebookShare this with TwitterShare this with Whatsapp. Orange walks will be re-routed to avoid the church where a sectarian attack took place on a priest. Susan Aitken said the council was strength-testing existing laws to prevent attacks like the one on Canon Tom White a week ago . She said: "The sectarian hate crime that took place on Saturday (7 July) was revolting and I understand the depth of feeling shown in communities across the city and beyond. "We are supporting the ongoing Police Scotland investigation wherever we can. However, I have to be clear that the council does not have any legal authority to introduce a blanket ban on Orange walks, or public processions by any other organisation. "The council will continue to closely examine how it operates within the national legislation that governs public processions. Investigation after priest 'spat on' during Orange walk in Glasgow.

UPDATE 1-Orange says open to French telecom tie-up talks, not an instigator

ORA TRI

AIX-EN-PROVENCE, France (Reuters) - French telecoms firms Orange (ORAN.PA) is open to discussing potential tie-ups with other operators in its home market but is not likely to be the instigator of consolidation in the sector, financial chief Ramon Fernandez said. An aggressive price war between French telecoms companies has revived expectations in recent months that the sector, dominated by Orange, Bouygues Telecom, Altice Europe (ATCA.AS) and Iliad (ILD.PA) was ripe for consolidation. Altice Europe's French unit SFR was approached last month by Bouygues, two sources close to the matter have told Reuters, confirming earlier reports by French newspaper Le Monde. Orange's Fernandez said that consolidation would have to happen at some point, across Europe as well as in France. "In France there's no room for four operators. (...) This is an industry that needs a lot of capital, you need to invest a lot to roll out next generation networks," he said, adding that powerful competition from the United States and Asia was also a factor. Nokia (NOK), Orange Gear Up for 5G With Cloud RAN Trial - June 20, 2018

NOKIA ORA

This cloud RAN trial was the first of its kind in operational LTE network in Europe to be conducted using the operator’s own cloud infrastructure. The trial marked an important milestone in Orange’s upcoming distributed cloud architecture for 5G. The AirScale Cloud RAN of Nokia provides the flexibility as and when different requirements for 5G, IoT, low-latency services and end-to-end slicing crop up.Technicalities of the TrialThe trial, which lasted from March to the beginning of May, had radio sites in Chelm and the virtualized part of the baseband around 70 km away in a data center in Lublin. Nokia's AirScale Cloud Base Station software split the baseband processing load across the radio cell sites and data center, delivering equally strong network performance on both Nokia's reference cloud infrastructure and on Orange's own cloud environment. The company’s software architecture enables on-time performance of crucial functions, at the cell site. Meanwhile at the data center, non-real-time functions are delivered cost-effectively by centralized software.Nokia’s Position in the 5G RaceNokia has conducted a number of transmission trial projects in different countries this year in collaboration with many companies. For instance, it launched new 5G services and successfully completed a 5G transmission test in China earlier this month.
