Google and Orange building cable between US and France

GOOG ORA +1 more GOOG ORA GOOGL

Telecoms firm Orange has teamed up with Google to work on a private undersea cable connecting the Atlantic coasts of France and the United States. Measuring 6,600km in length, the undersea cable will be named Dunant after Henry Dunant, the first Nobel peace prize winner and founder of the Red Cross. When it comes online in 2020, it will provide Orange alone with a capacity of “more than 30 terabits per second, per [fibre] pair” – enough, the company says, “to transfer a 1GB movie file in 30 microseconds”. Neither Orange nor Google released information about the total capacity of the cable, nor how they would allocate it between them. It’s Google’s fourth completely private undersea cable, following two short-distance tests, named Alpha and Beta, and the long-distance Curie cable – named after the famed physicist Marie Curie – that links the US west coast to Chile. Google builds private cables, the company says, to provide better performance, latency and capacity for its cloud customers. In this case, building the cable privately allows it to ensure that its landing points are as close as possible to its Belgian and North Virginian data centres.

France's Orange Bank sued over 439 million euros lost in Madoff collapse

ORA

PARIS (Reuters) - A French woman and her daughter are bringing a law suit against Orange Bank to try to recover some of the 439 million euros (393 million pounds) they say they lost in the collapse of Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme a decade ago. Finama, which was later renamed Groupama Banque, was acquired by French telecoms operator Orange <ORAN.PA> in 2016 and turned into Orange Bank, a mobile banking business. Nicolas Lecoq-Vallon, a lawyer representing the Apfelbaums, says they would have withdrawn their funds from Madoff's scheme in 1999 if Finama had shared its suspicions with them. Finama cannot be held responsible for the family's decision to invest with Madoff, Vatier said, adding that the bank had dropped the Apfelbaums as clients because it didn't want to retain customers who had dealt directly with Madoff. But Lecoq-Vallon said Finama had a duty to share any information it had about Madoff with its clients, even more so because at that point Igoin was long deceased and his heirs didn't have his knowledge of financial markets.

Exclusive: Orange Bank's CEO Coisne to resign in next few weeks - sources

ORA

Exclusive - Orange Bank's CEO Coisne to resign in next few weeks: sources. By Mathieu Rosemain and Gwénaëlle BarzicReuters19 September 2018, 16:45 GMT. PARIS (Reuters) - The boss of telecom group Orange's online bank will resign in the next few weeks, three sources close to the matter told Reuters, underscoring operational challenges at the lender less than a year after its launch. Andre Coisne had been hired to run and develop Orange Bank, which was formed after Orange acquired a majority stake in Groupama Banque in 2016. The nomination in May this year of a new group head for mobile financial services at Orange Bank, Paul de Leusse, precipitated Coisne's departure, as a new management structure is being prepared at the banking unit, two of the sources said. Orange's Chief Executive Stephane Richard has championed the new division as a key driver for growth and a new way to attract customers as a price war continues to rage in France's telecoms market. Orange has set a goal to get two million bank customers within 10 years, or a quarter of France's online banking sector. But the group has declined to update the markets on its progress since February, when it said the service had a total of 100,000 clients.
