It is primarily aimed at consumers from small towns and lower-income groups, Flipkart sources have been quoted as saying in Economic Times. Chinese apps have an estimated 200-300 million unique users in the country, and many from smaller towns and cities had dedicated viewers base. But this is not exactly the first project of Flipkart in the social commerce domain.

Flipkart: Awaiting advisory from states on resuming full services: Flipkart, Telecom News, ET Telecom

According to Union Home Ministry's order on Sunday, "all other activities will be permitted, except those which are specifically prohibited" under the fourth phase of the lockdown that ends on May 31. However, in containment zones, only essential activities will be allowed. "Post the Government of India's guidelines last evening, we are awaiting the advisories from different states. We will continue to work in accordance with the directives from the government and local authorities while serving customers, sellers through our safe supply chain," a Flipkart Group spokesperson said. "We welcome the efforts by the governments at Centre and states in progressively charting out a lockdown exit plan and allowing e-commerce to serve the consumers with their varied product needs in all the classified zones, except containment zones," the spokesperson added. Sales of non-essential items on e-commerce platforms in the first week of May, after sales of such items were allowed in green and orange zones, were lower than last year on account of the lockdown. However, industry executives said orders were scaling as people bought apparel, smartphones and grooming products among other items.

"We respect the decision because the government has many complex scenarios to manage while protecting more than a billion people in the country," Krishnamurthy said. Four days after allowing e-commerce firms to also deliver non-essential items such as electronic goods and readymade garments, the government on Sunday said sale of non-essential items will continue to be prohibited during the lockdown period till May 3. "With this development, changes our plans at the Flipkart group, the entire leadership and the management team is completely aligned and committed to supporting the government's decision...," Krishnamurthy said. He added that the company will continue to deliver groceries and essentials to customers across the nation, adding that it will do so while following the highest standards of hygiene across supply chain and last mile delivery.

Ecommerce platforms such as Amazon, Flipkart, Bigbasket, Grofers and Netmeds are allowed to sell essential commodities such as food, pharmaceuticals and medical devices. The reason for reversing the order is not known immediately. But there was a talk of some retail traders mounting pressure on the government that local shops be also allowed to sell non-essentials items, like ecommerce giants. The previous order said, "Supply of essential goods is allowed, as under: All facilities in the supply chain of essential goods, whether involved in manufacturing, wholesale or retail of such goods through local stores, large brick and mortar stores or ecommerce companies should be allowed to operate, ensuring strict social distancing without any restriction on their timing of opening and closure".
