Xiaomi Crushes Fitbit and Apple in Wearable Shipments

XIA AAPL +1 more XIA AAPL FIT

That growth wasn't surprising: Fitness trackers and smartwatches are becoming increasingly common. But the growth of Xiaomi (NASDAQOTH: XIACF) -- which claimed the top spot with a 21.5% share -- likely stunned some investors. Xiaomi tied Fitbit(NYSE: FIT) for first place a year ago, with each company controlling 13.7% of the market, while Apple(NASDAQ: AAPL) ranked second with a 10.3% share. However, Fitbit's share dropped to 10.9% during the third quarter, putting the former market leader in third place, while Apple remained in second with a 13.1% share. The low price tag of the Mi Band 3 (at about $30) made it a top choice for budget users and emerging markets.Meanwhile, Fitbit's shipments slipped 3% to 3.5 million units as stronger sales of the Versa, Charge 3, and Ace only partly offset softer demand for its traditional fitness trackers. Fitbit's revenue growth slowed to a crawl over the past two years as sales of its lower-end fitness trackers decelerated and rivals like Xiaomi, Apple, and Huawei entered the market.

Xiaomi teases a 48MP smartphone camera

XIA

Xiaomi president Lin Bin took to Chinese social media platform Weibo to tease a sneak peek at a smartphone with a supposed 48MP camera. Xiaomi’s phone cameras have lagged behind other smartphones, so this looks like an earnest attempt to leap ahead: if the phone bearing this 48MP camera indeed arrives in January, it will be the first to do so with that many megapixels. For reference, Nokia holds the current record with its 41MP Lumia 1020, while the Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro both feature 40MP main cameras. The high pixel count is clearly an interesting tidbit, but without more detail on the camera tech or the phone it’s arriving on, we can only speculate what the final product will look like. For example, while the photo is too close-cropped to determine how many lenses it will have, but given the nearby volume rocker, it seems to be in the upper-left corner of the device. That means there's a chance it could follow the two-lens vertical setup of the Xiaomi Mi 8 - in which case, the 48MP camera could arrive on the Mi 9, though we haven’t heard any rumors suggesting its imminent arrival.

Xiaomi: Xiaomi leads India wearables market in Q3 2018: Report, Telecom News, ET Telecom

XIA FB

Xiaomi and GOQii are followed by Titan, Samsung and Fossil in terms of market share. "It is too early to say that the India wearables market has started moving towards the smart wearables," said Jaipal Singh, Associate Research Manager, Client Devices, IDC India. "However, vendors have started analysing the big pricing gaps between the basic and smart wearables," Singh said. "Also, many vendors haven't explored the kid segment which can be a volume driver for this category as they are more comfortable with technology and new products," he added. Although their shipments witnessed a decline of 20 per cent quarter-over-quarter, Xiaomi saw a healthy growth of 77 per cent in this quarter when compared to the same time a year ago.
